Senior Education and Skills Adviser (EL1 / EL2 Equivalent)
- Pay Rate: $100 – $137 per hour + super
- Location: Canberra, ACT ( Hybrid), remote work may be considered
- Contract Length: 2-year initial contract starting July 2026, potential extension for an additional 2 years

- Security Clearance: Baseline clearance required; NV1 preferred

In this role, you will help shape Australia’s international development footprint by guiding education - a top investment priority - across the Indo-Pacific. Joining a high-performing team, you will provide critical policy advice, design strategic investments, and bolster the technical capabilities of staff in Canberra and overseas.
Role Responsibilities
In this highly collaborative role, you will deliver strategic technical support and intellectual leadership across decentralized education portfolios. Your responsibilities will include:
- Technical & Policy Advice: Deliver high-quality assistance to design, implement, and improve investments and policy coherence.
- Capability Building: Strengthen staff capability through training, mentoring, and developing global best-practice tools.
- Analysis & Evaluation: Monitor project outcomes, review international best practices, and synthesize lessons learned.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Build networks and facilitate policy dialogue with foreign governments, NGOs, and multilateral partners.
Note: This position involves periodic domestic and international travel.
Key Selection Criteria
To be successful in this position, you will demonstrate an EL1/EL2 capability profile alongside the following specialist skills:
- Education Sector Expertise: Proven experience in building effective, resilient education systems in developing countries, with expertise across sub-sectors such as basic/early education, skills/training, education technology, or inclusive education in fragile/conflict-affected contexts.
- Geopolitical & Strategic Acumen: Strong understanding of the geopolitics of the Indo-Pacific region (specifically Southeast Asia and the Pacific) and how they intersect with Australia’s strategic development objectives.
- Intellectual Leadership & Policy Advice: A track record of developing investment concepts, monitoring complex programs, and synthesizing global best practices into actionable policy advice.
- Stakeholder Management & Dialogue: Exceptional communication skills with a demonstrated ability to navigate high-level networks, facilitate policy dialogue, and negotiate positions with foreign government partners and NGOs.
- Capability & Mentorship: Experience designing and delivering training, mentoring junior staff, or producing guidance tools to uplift institutional capacity.
